Cistercian Preparatory School junior Josh Hays has been named the 27th annual recipient of The Catholic Foundation’s Hal Tehan Scholar Award.

On an exceptionally windy day in 2021, at least two miles from the shore of Lake Hubbard near Dallas, a 13-year-old Mercedes Porter-Via pulled a stranded man aboard the sailboat “Fun” and saved his life. Now, at 15, Mercedes’ heroism has been officially recognized by the U.S. Congress.

Each year, Catholic Schools Week offers the Diocese of Dallas an opportunity to highlight how its Catholic schools impact their communities, serving as beacons of light, faith, and hope. This year, the weeklong celebration takes on extra meaning as the diocese enters a new chapter in its educational story — a new Catholic school.

Middle school students at Prince of Peace Catholic School in Plano are on a mission to spread kindness—whether by writing cards, donating books, or throwing a big holiday bash, complete with ice cream sundaes and loads of presents.

Animated conversations created a buzz throughout the classroom in early December as groups of fourth graders crowded around circuit-boards in Santa Clara of Assisi Catholic Academy’s new STEM lab.

As part of the celebration of Catholic Schools Week 2024, students at Holy Family Catholic Academy in Irving on Jan. 29 walked to a nearby neighborhood park, picking up trash along the streets and in the park in an effort to give back to their community.

Each year, St. Rita Catholic School students line the hallways to clap and cheer as eighth graders walk one last time through school prior to graduating. The Class of 2020 eighth graders, however, did not get that opportunity as schools were operating remotely due to the pandemic. As part of this year’s Catholic Schools Week celebration, members of that class were welcomed back for the special Mass and their very “Clap Out” celebration.

With the observance of Catholic Schools Week each year, communities take time to celebrate all that endears them to their Catholic school — faith, fellowship, and academic success.
