Streaming through the rose windows of the National Shrine Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, rays of sunlight fell upon the lawyers, judges, and other legal professionals gathered in the pews below, as they asked the Holy Spirit to illuminate their hearts and minds during a Red Mass on Sept. 26. Among the worshipers was United States Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh, who that evening was honored with the 2026 St. Thomas More Award.

In a sudden development in a case that has lingered in the courts for nearly a decade, the state of New York has given up on trying to enforce an insurance regulation that would have forced Catholic and other religious organizations to pay for abortions.
At the Red Mass celebrated on the day before the Supreme Court’s new term, Washington Cardinal Robert W. McElroy emphasized that “men and women of the law are architects of hope by reason of their vocation.”
